Congratulations Charlie

The staff at Noonan Sport Specialists would like to congratulate Charlie Woida on his new position as Associate Director of Athletic Performance at the University of Montana. Charlie will be in charge of the strength and conditioning for women’s soccer, golf, track and field, and cross country. Over the past 6 years Charlie has been in pursuit of a full time college strength and conditioning job.  In the process he has interned, volunteered, and worked in many areas of the country where he has learned from some of the best collegiate strength coaches around. Charlie will begin his new career in Montana August 16th.

Although Charlie’s stay with us at Noonan Sport Specialists was an abbreviated one, we were glad to have him. We wish him the best at Montana but also look forward to working with him again in the future.

For the final two weeks of the summer from August 16th-August 27th Dustin and Mike will be again taking over the summer athlete training. We will do our best to keep schedules the same but please have patience if we are in need of modifying a few of the group times and/or days.

Thank you for understanding and thank you to Charlie for his time spent with us.

NSS Client Transformation Vol. 10

“In March of 2009, I went to Steve Reishus in need of help. I weighed roughly 250 lbs. and had failed the physical agility test that is required for the law enforcement program at Alex Tech. I told him there was only eight weeks left before I would have to wait until the following year to enroll in the program. He immediately took me under his wing and we started training the next day. I can tell Steve takes passion in his job. He went out of his way many times to meet at tracks so we could practice sprinting or to set up appointments with Alex Tech to use their obstacle course. He took many measures to help ensure that I pass the test.

Eight weeks later I had dropped 25 pounds and felt like a new me. The test day came; Steve met me at the college and gave me the encouragement I needed to pass. After I passed the test I thought, why stop now? We continued to train and I continued to drop the pounds. By the end of August I was down to 185 lbs. I have been training with Steve ever since and all I have seen is positive results. The experience Steve has given me has truly changed my life.”

“With Dustin’s accountability and support I have undergone a complete lifestyle and body transformation! It is still a work in progress but I have drastically changed my outlook on both food and exercise not only for my own health but for my families health as well. I have become a healthier and stronger person with less stress, no headaches, and no more going to the chiropractor 3 times a month!

I started a 16 week program to gain muscle and reduce body fat to attain the leaner athletic body I want. Since November 6th I have lost 15lb’s and overall I have lost  5 1/4″ off my waist and almost 4″ off my hips! While the measurements are nice the improvements in how I feel on a daily basis is the real reason why I will continue.

My workouts are challenging and I’ve enjoyed the strength training programs and I’m ready for more! Thank you NSS!”

*** Trainer’s Note:

Heidi ran through this event with a time of 10:29. The most impressive part… not once did she stop to catch her breath. The only time she even paused was to get some chaulk before her cleans. So that means everything was done without a break, including her 25 pushups. VERY impressive. She was well prepared, came in and knocked it out, and walked out like nothing happened! Great job!

“I’ve learned many valuable tools since starting my training with NSS.”

  1. Cardio is not the answer to weight loss and building muscle.
  2. My body needs periods of rest and recovery.
  3. You don’t need to always “kill yourself” for a great work out.
  4. Poor nutrition will sabotage even the best fitness plan.

“I started my sessions with Mike back in November 2009.  Since then I have seen dramatic changes in my body composition.

I have always worked out often but since starting with Mike I have realized that while what I was doing was good, I wasn’t getting the results I wanted.  The majority of my old workout regimen included mostly cardio, cardio, cardio.  I’ve now learned the main focus for burning fat and sculpting muscle is strength, strength, strength training!   I still love cardio but know now that I need strength as well…I need variety.

In August of 2009 I weighed 145 pounds now I’m to an all time low of 130 pounds and it feels great!!!  Even more so than the weight loss, it feels awesome to be strong and athletic. My focus has now moved from weight loss to building muscle and strength.  The physical demands of being a mom of three small children requires the utmost physical strength.

Would I recommend training with Noonans to someone who was thinking about it?  YES!….IT’S ADDICTING and I love it!

The expertise of the trainers allows them to target all your goals while doing it at a very challenging yet realistic pace and minimizing the risk of injury. Whether you think you’re in pretty good shape but are looking for that “change” to get you to the next level, or you currently haven’t made fitness a priority at all. The trainers have a way of working with you from the very level you are at today and progressing until you reach your goal.  And trust me when I say, once you reach that goal there will always be another one!!!!”

NSS Client Transformation Vol. 7

“I was a four sport athlete in high school and played college sports for a couple years. In my late twenties I started participating in triathlons and had worked up to the level of doing Half Ironman events(1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run).

However, after a number of years, four kids, and four moves, my fitness level had slowly but surely deteriorated.  I found myself doing fairly well during the summer months but I hibernated in the winter.  I certainly was no longer ready to compete in triathlons, let alone even think about a Half Ironman.

I remember the first meeting with Mike and Dustin when I told them my goal was to complete a Half Ironman.  I told them, “believe me, there is an athlete in there somewhere, we just need to find him.”  It took me longer than I wanted, but in your 40s you don’t recover from several years of relative inactivity overnight.

One of the things I have really appreciated about working at Noonan’s is they have figured out how to get the most out of me and have tailored a program to meet my needs. Last September, Mike’s work and mine paid off as I once again completed a Half Ironman. I am planning to do another one at the end of this summer.

I have been doing two training sessions per week consistently now for about 2.5 years.  My fitness and energy levels are as good as they have been in years.  I have done things physically (including multiple 300 workouts – ask Mike or Dustin what this is) that I would not have thought were possible a couple of years ago.

It is hard to put a value on feeling good.”

Quick stats: Over 5o pounds lost, “300″ PR of 25:06, multiple 15 minute nonstop kettlebell circuits.

Tom was our first ever personal training client here at NSS. His pursuit of personal training began our entire personal training program. In being the first and having trained for so long Tom has seen everything we could possibly throw at him and handled it all with amazing efforts. Thanks Tom!

”I originally signed up with NSS for a few sessions to help increase my running pace. I have really never worked on leg or core strength…I always figured running and upper body weight lifting was all I needed. I quickly found out how wrong I was. Mike told me that I was only as strong as my weakest link, and my core was definitely that. So as you can imagine, there was a lot of focus on my core, running form, stretching, and overall strength. I felt and saw results right away.

I also learned that with my own self training I was actually overtraining. I have always seemed to get sick often, and had that tired, run down feeling. Mike taught me that overtraining can lower ones immune system tolerance and run you down. He told me that I am building muscle and getting stronger even on my off-days or light weeks. Learning how to workout less and smarter was probably one of my greatest obstacles to overcome.

After learning some of the core values of training I wanted it all…strength, speed and more of a ripped look…(who doesn’t right?) Since training with NSS I have set PR’s(personal records) in deadlift, squat, and bench press…way more than I lifted previously. I could make mention of all the strength exercises, but some of the most memorable (or should I say painful) were the tractor tire flips, pushing and pulling the weight sleds, and the stability ball hamstring curls. I have added muscle and lowered my body fat below 10%. I love the feeling of being stronger, leaner, and in turn a more efficient runner.”

“300 Workout”

25 x pull-ups

50 x 135# deadlifts

50 x push-ups

50 x 24” box jumps

50 x 16kg clean to press

“The 300 was a great challenge as it is a mix of strength and endurance activities, it really tests you physically and mentally.”    -Vic T.

NSS Client Transformation Vol. 5

“Being a woman in her 50’s, and having had back surgery a number of years ago, I was afraid to even consider working with a trainer. But my younger daughter was getting married and I wanted to “look good” and be able to dance at her wedding as well as build muscle so that I could continue to handle the physical part of my job and be able to carry my grandchildren someday. So, last July, with the urging of my oldest daughter, I decided to take a chance and started working with Mike at NSS.

I started to work out for an hour twice a week. Having these appointments on my calendar and knowing Mike was expecting me to show up was essential for me to keep going. I’ll admit that it took me awhile to be able to say this, but now I really do look forward to these sessions!

Mike has been patient and has gradually added more as he felt I could handle it—and he is very encouraging.  That said, he is also tough and demands the best that I can give and challenges me to go beyond what I think I am capable of doing. He is always changing the workout so I never get bored—it is amazing how many different ways he can come up with to work a muscle!  He has taught me to be aware of and trust my body–and to believe in myself. So many times I’ll think there is no way I’ll be able to do what he’s asking of me but then I do it!!

After 10 months, I have lost 12 pounds, 3% fat (I’m now in the “desirable range”!), one pants size and I have so much more energy.  Life is good and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!”

NSS Client Transformation Vol. 4

“I signed up for personal training to get some variety in my workout and to push me beyond what I push myself.  NSS definitely did that and more!

In addition to showing me new moves, having me lift weights I never thought I could and making me sweat my booty off (literally), they also provided education, motivation and helped me with my struggles with nutrition, proper form and range of motion.

I lost a total of 4 ½ inches in my waist, over 2 inches in my hips and am wearing pants in a size I’ve only dreamed of.  My confidence has soared and for the first time, I’m really happy with how I look.”
